What are "readers"?
As the name implies, readers are eyeglasses made
for reading. They come with lenses pre-made in a variety of
strengths. Readers have the advantage of not requiring a
prescription or waiting for custom-made eyeglasses. However,
for people who need different correction strengths for each eye,
readers will not correct vision as well and therefore may not
provide as much relief from eye fatigue and headaches.
Readers are not for long-distance vision or for
driving. They are also not computer glasses. The lenses
in readers are designed for clear vision at the distance people normally
hold a book or newspaper. Computer screens sit farther
away. So, if you are interested in glasses to help relieve the
eyestrain you feel while using your computer, ask us about
computer glasses.
Who can wear readers?
Readers are great for someone who does not
normally wear glasses, but finds that close-up reading has become
more difficult. This happens to most people starting in their
40's, and is called presbyopia. Typically, the first sign of
presbyopia is having to hold your reading material a little farther
away. Some also experience symptoms of eye fatigue, headaches,
or even nausea.
Purchasing readers should not be used as an
alternative to getting an eye exam. Any change in visual
needs, such as the change that has you interested in readers, is a
sign of needing an eye exam to check for the presence of
sight-threatening conditions. The prescription you get as a
result of your exam will help clarify whether readers alone will be
enough to ease your visual discomfort while reading.
