Dress Your Eyes
For Success
by Valerie Robert
Over the years I have seen many “Dress for
Success” books, seminars, and guidelines on the do’s and don’ts of
style for the sake of professional success. There is no shortage of
advice on how to be more successful, but there is an important
detail that often gets either overlooked, addressed too lightly or
totally forgotten: eyeglasses.
The years have seen styles change, but there is
always one constant factor; style and success are very much linked.
“Dress
as you want to be seen: Serious, professional, upward-bound and
ready to meet clients,” says Scott Reeves at
Forbes.com.1
“Choose your clothes to meet your goals,” says John T. Molloy in his
famous book, Dress for Success.
“55%
of another person's perception of you is based on how you look,”
said Kim Zoller, owner of Image Dynamics.2
Glasses absolutely never go un-noticed. They are
the first thing people see when they look into your eyes, because
your eyeglasses frame the windows to your soul. Sure, your shoes match your
suit, and your hair and make-up are done to perfection, all
expressing that you are a professional at what you do. What do your
eyeglasses say? I strongly urge you to look in the mirror and ask
yourself, “what do my glasses say about me?”
They should make you feel good about your look,
comfortable, maybe a little edgy or just plain satisfied. You should
be able to see your eyes through your lenses, not reflections, and
they should compliment your face, not too small or too big. Bigger
isn’t always better. The color can vary according to your
personality, as can the style, but the color and style should always
be expressive and harmonize with the rest of your style. Perhaps
that means you want them to stand out or blend in. If you are not
sure, ask someone, a friend or family member who is forthright with
you. Or ask me. I will be honest and straightforward. If you have
chosen well, I will tell you. If not, I will help you find what does
work and tell you why it works better.
Start this year off right, look smart and dress
your eyes for success.
